Ice Study, I (Iceland), video stills, 2013

The observational piece focuses on the sculptural shapes, movement and decay of small icebergs at the bottom of a rapidly receding glacier.

The video highlights the distinctive and often changing forms of the "bergy bits" and "growlers"* through a variety of unique moments of ice and water interactions.

More info:

The footage in this project was filmed over a five-day period in a glacial lagoon in Iceland. After the icebergs calve, they slowly transform: breaking, melting and flipping, often becoming interesting sculptural shapes. Because the lagoon has an outlet to the ocean, the tide comes in and out creating whirlpool like currents that entrap the small icebergs. Some are forced further into the lagoon, others circle and crash into each other like iceberg-bumper-cars, and a few are sent out to sea.

I filmed with the intention of showing unique moments of ice and water interactions, movement, virtual stillness and highlighting the distinctive and often changing forms.

In the presentation of the footage, I'm interested in changing the scale and our relationship to the ice. I want the tiny elements to be majestic and the large forms to be highlighted for their delicacy.

*Bergy bits: Small icebergs, rising between 3-13 feet out of the water.

Growlers: Very small chunks of floating ice that rise only about 3 feet out of the water. When trapped air escapes as the iceberg melts, it sometimes makes a sound like the growl of an animal.
